Woodbridge Road Academy receives outstanding Ofsted ratings

The SEND school, which opened in 2022, achieved outstanding ratings in three of four categories during its first Ofsted inspection, with inspectors praising staff for helping pupils make "huge strides" in resilience and self-confidence.

Why it matters: With SEND provision under national scrutiny, these outstanding results show how dedicated special schools can transform outcomes for some of society's most vulnerable children.

The big picture: Woodbridge Road Academy, part of the Paradigm Trust, received outstanding ratings for behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. The quality of education was rated good.

The inspection took place on 3 and 5 June 2025, marking a significant milestone for the school, which opened in 2022 in partnership with Suffolk County Council.

What they're saying: "Due to the relentlessly positive and patient work of staff, and the high expectations of them, pupils make huge strides in their resilience and self-confidence," the report noted. "Pupils know that adults will support them exceptionally well if they need help. As a result, pupils substantially improve their attitudes to learning and their attendance during their time at the school."

Principal Naomi Shenton said: "I am incredibly proud of how well our pupils conducted themselves during the inspection and how confidently they spoke to inspectors, despite the challenges that can come with meeting unfamiliar people. Their maturity was a real credit to our school."

For context: The academy was established to bring more special educational needs and disabilities places to Suffolk, helping fill gaps in provision across the county. Paradigm Trust also operates Special Education Units at Piper's Vale Academy and Murrayfield Academy in Ipswich.

What's next: The leadership team remains focused on building upon this success as the academy continues to grow and evolve.

"This outcome is a reflection of everyone's hard work and belief in our shared vision," Shenton added. "I'm excited about the next chapter in our journey as we strive for excellence in every aspect of school life."

The bottom line: The outstanding Ofsted results validate Woodbridge Road Academy's approach to special education and its role in addressing critical gaps in Suffolk's SEND provision.
