University and college unite charities for Christmas event

The University of Suffolk and Suffolk New College are hosting a free event where businesses can pledge time, skills or partnerships to nine local charities instead of paying admission.

Why it matters: The pledge-based model offers businesses multiple ways to support local charities – through time, skills, financial contributions or collaborative projects rather than a traditional ticket price.

The details: The Gift of Christmas: A Community Celebration of Giving will take place at the university's Waterfront building in Neptune Quay on Wednesday, 26 November from 15:00 to 17:00, featuring Suffolk Mind's keynote address on wellbeing challenges facing local people.

Guests will meet representatives from St Nicholas Hospice Care, 4YP, Iceni, Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) Charity, St Elizabeth Hospice, Brave Futures and Suffolk Mind.

What to expect: The event will include live music and festive refreshments. Father Christmas and his elf will also attend to collect gifts and essential items for families in need this Christmas.

What they're saying: Gemma Matten, business engagement manager at the University of Suffolk, said: "We're excited to bring together local businesses, charities, and partners to celebrate the season while building relationships that create lasting social impact."

Gaynor Marsh, employer engagement advisor at Suffolk New College , said: "We work with many businesses across the country, including almost 200 industry partners. Many are charitable organisations and we are looking forward to working with them and others on this festive project that will bring the community together."

The bottom line: The event aims to turn seasonal goodwill into lasting partnerships between Suffolk businesses and charities.
