Sizewell C boosts historic ship project with £20,000 sponsorship

Nuclear power station Sizewell C has become the latest corporate sponsor of the Sutton Hoo ship reconstruction, donating £20,000 to help bring the ancient vessel back to life.

The big picture: The donation moves the £1.5 million reconstruction project closer to its goal of launching a full-size replica of the Anglo-Saxon burial ship on the River Deben by 2026.

Why it matters: For Sizewell C, the sponsorship aligns with their broader work uncovering Suffolk's history, including recent archaeological discoveries such as an 11th-century coin hoard at the power station site.

The details:

  • Sizewell C has joined the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company Corporate Sponsorship Scheme

  • The reconstruction project involves more than 160 volunteers using authentic 7th-century techniques

  • The original ship, discovered in 1939, is described by The British Museum as "the richest intact early medieval grave in Europe"

  • Work is ongoing at The Longshed in Woodbridge, which is open to visitors

What they're saying: Julia Pyke, Joint Managing Director of Sizewell C, said: "This is a fantastic project that will make a valuable contribution to our understanding of both Suffolk's and England's Anglo-Saxon past. It's open to local people to come and see its progress at all stages of the build, and so it's a great educational project to have here in Suffolk."

Project manager Jacq Barnard added: "The Sutton Hoo Ship's Company survives and thrives thanks to its amazing community of more than 160 volunteers and its family of supporters from across Woodbridge, Suffolk, Britain, and the world."

How to visit: The ship build can be viewed at The Longshed on Tide Mill Way, Woodbridge:

  • Weekdays: 10am-4pm

  • Weekends: 11am-3pm

The bottom line: Other businesses interested in supporting the project can find sponsorship details on the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company website.
