Why it matters: Six months ago, Chris believed recovery was impossible. But his rapid transformation from homeless alcoholic to recovery advocate is just one example of how local outreach services are changing lives across the region.
The details: Chris was discovered in February by Martin Pender from Anglia Care Trust's Rough Sleeper Outreach Service. He was subsequently supported by Brian Peters from the charity's Drug and Alcohol Recovery Outreach Services, part of Turning Point's Suffolk Drug and Alcohol Service.
Fast-forward six months, and Chris is now moving into ACT's STARS accommodation.
What's next: Chris has ambitious plans for his future, including securing full-time employment and his own home. Most significantly, he aspires to be a beacon of hope for others struggling with addiction.
"I want to work beside others in my situation and help them like I have been helped," he said.
What they're saying: "I feel 100 times better thanks to the help of Brian, Martin and Turning Point," Chris said. "With their help I know I'm getting my life back. I've stopped drinking, which has enabled me to get back relationships with my family."
Brian Peters described the transformation as remarkable: "From the first day Chris was referred to me, you could see he's such a genuine, nice fella. He was living rough and desperate for help, always apologising to us when he had no need to do so."
Peters added: "He's a genuine role model for others in his position and I'm so proud of how far he's come."
Chris praised the support team's approach: "Brian and the team are brilliant, reliable, helpful, honest and always there to listen. I hit it off with Brian immediately, which I feel has made things easier for me."
For context: Anglia Care Trust has operated for more than 50 years, working to help people across the region achieve their potential through high-quality advice, guidance and support services.
The bottom line: Chris's six-month journey from rock bottom to recovery champion showcases how targeted local intervention can create extraordinary transformations and inspire wider community change.
