The details: Damian Davies, 36, of no fixed address, was charged with multiple offences following his brief freedom from Hollesley Bay Prison on Thursday, 17 July.

  • His first target was a house in Hollesley, where he smashed a window in a door to gain entry and stole a bicycle, clothing and food.

  • The following morning at around 01:15, Davies struck again – this time breaking into the Post Office in Carr Street, Ipswich. He smashed the glass doors to gain entry and made off with vapes, sweets and drinks.

  • Just over two hours later at 03:35, police received another call reporting that a man had gone into the River Orwell near Regatta Quay before getting out and walking along the pavement.

  • Officers located Davies and arrested him on suspicion of burglary and absconding from prison.

What's next: Davies appeared before Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Saturday, 19 July, where he was remanded in custody. His next hearing is scheduled for Monday, 18 August at Ipswich Crown Court.
