New state-of-the-art swimming complex approved for Ipswich

Ipswich Borough Council's ambitious Aquatic Centre plan has secured planning consent, with the facility targeting an "Excellent" BREEAM sustainability rating.

Why it matters: This community-focused development will replace Crown Pools and significantly enhance the public realm around Portman Road as part of the Council's masterplan to rejuvenate Ipswich.

It is the latest in a string of positive regeneration stories for the town following the approval of plans to redevelop Lloyds Avenue and the purchase of the former Grimwades building.

What they're saying: "This approval is a momentous achievement, representing another leap forward in making our vision a reality," says Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council. "This project will become a community jewel, a symbol of how sports, leisure, and communal wellbeing are valued in Ipswich."

"This is a huge step towards providing modern, accessible, and sustainable sports facilities that will serve residents for generations to come," says Councillor John Cook, Portfolio Holder for Communities and Sport. "The new Aquatic Centre is not just a replacement for Crown Pools – it is a significant upgrade that puts health, inclusion, and community pride at its core."

Lee Walker , CEO of Ipswich Central , the Business Improvement District for Ipswich town centre, said: "That plans to develop Portman Road have been approved is a positive step forward for the town. A new aquatics centre with pool and water flumes will appeal to families, better car parking provision, a new hotel and expansion of the football stadium will all be good news for visitors to the town. I look forward to seeing how these exciting plans progress."

Behind the scenes: The project received support from Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Town Football Club during an extensive consultation period.

What's next: The project will now move into the technical design phase, where detailed architectural and engineering designs will be produced. The final funding strategy is expected to consist of a combination of public and private sector investment.

Once technical design is complete, which may take up to 12 months, a detailed programme and construction timeline will be agreed.

The bottom line: With planning consent now in place, this transformational project takes a significant step towards providing Ipswich with advanced, inclusive facilities promoting health, wellbeing, and sporting excellence.
