The details: Ipswich Borough Council unanimously approved Suffolk County Council's plans for the new school at a planning meeting earlier today. Outline permission was first granted in January 2020, with today's meeting focusing on finer details around appearance, landscaping, layout and scale.
The two-storey Henley Gate Primary School will have space for 420 pupils, with seven classrooms on the ground floor and nine on the first floor, including provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities. A new 60-place pre-school and playing fields are also proposed alongside the school.
Cllr Carole Jones told councillors the development was starting to feel like a community, with the primary school at the heart of it.
What to look out for: Councillors heard that the plans fall short of around a third of the sports provision originally earmarked for the site, due to changing government requirements on the county council to deliver the school. Officers told members the shortfall could still be brought forward by developers as part of the remaining phases of the overall neighbourhood.
