Mystery 'prestigious retailer' lined up for former Monsoon unit in town centre

A prominent Grade II listed building in Ipswich town centre is under offer, with agents confirming a new tenant has been secured for the former Monsoon site before Christmas.

Why it matters: The building has stood empty since 2019 and occupies a key corner on the junction of Westgate Street, Museum Street and High Street, opposite Marks & Spencer. Its revival could mark another step forward for Ipswich’s high street, with a new business expected to open ahead of the Christmas trading period.

The details: A spokesperson for commercial property agent Penn Commercial said: “We are excited to announce that this attractive Grade II Listed building in Ipswich’s busiest retail and leisure thoroughfare will be seeing some dramatic changes over the coming weeks."

The agent said it was "delighted to have secured a prestigious new retail operator to Ipswich," and that they were doing all they could to "assist with the planned store opening before the all-important Christmas period."

They added that extra care would be taken to preserve the "stunning" heritage features of the property.

No further details have been released about the incoming business. When contacted by Ipswich.co.uk, Penn declined to comment further.

For context: In June, Ipswich Borough Council approved plans to link the site with the neighbouring former Tessuti unit, creating a two-floor café layout with seating for up to 102 customers. It is not yet known whether the new tenant intends to pursue this café use or has alternative plans.

The bottom line: The Monsoon site is under offer, and a new operator has been confirmed; however, it has yet to be announced who will occupy the substantial unit. According to Penn, the new tenant is looking to move fast, and Ipswich.co.uk will continue to follow developments as they unfold.
