Mark Pendlington appointed as Suffolk's new Lord-Lieutenant

His Majesty The King has appointed Mark Pendlington as the new Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk, succeeding Clare, Countess of Euston, who will retire on 15 April 2026 after distinguished service to the county.

Why it matters: The Lord-Lieutenant serves as the monarch's representative in the county, a prestigious role that recognises and supports communities, individuals and organisations across Suffolk.

The details: The appointment was announced by 10 Downing Street on Monday, 16 December. Mark Pendlington brings extensive experience from across public and private sectors, including leadership roles in industry, voluntary organisations, education and economic development.

He served as High Sheriff of Suffolk in 2023/24 and chaired the Festival of Suffolk in 2022, playing a pivotal role in bringing communities together to celebrate the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

His current roles include Pro-Chancellor of the University of Suffolk, Patron of Bury Drop-In, Chair of the Suffolk Business Board, Senior Non-Executive member of St Edmundsbury Cathedral Chapter, and Chair of Cefas, the government's marine science and research body. He lives near Sudbury with his partner, Richard.

Mark is an exceptional individual, who throughout a long career in Business and Education, has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those who live in Suffolk and the wider Eastern Region."

Mark Pendlington said: "I am deeply honoured to be appointed to serve His Majesty The King, and the opportunity it offers to recognise and support the work of so many communities, individuals and organisations that make Suffolk such a wonderful county. It is a very special privilege to succeed Clare, Countess of Euston CVO, who has given such outstanding service to the late Queen, The King and to Suffolk."

For context: Throughout his career, Mark Pendlington has championed initiatives to boost enterprise, create opportunities for young people, improve skills, support communities and encourage volunteering. He has held roles as Chair of Business in the Community (Eastern Region), Trustee of the British Racing School, Trustee of Gainsborough's House, and Chair of the New Anglia Enterprise Partnership. He is a Fellow of the Royal Countryside Fund.

The bottom line: Suffolk will welcome a new representative of the Crown in April, as a business leader with deep roots in the county and a track record of championing community causes takes up one of its most prestigious roles.
