Maharani: Forty years and still going strong

Established in the 1980s, Maharani on Norwich Road is a family-run Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant firmly embedded in the local community. Originally set up and run by Manik Miah, the reins were handed over to his nephew, Sumon Miah, just before 2020.

Sumon told me, "We are all family members. We have known each other for a very long time." This close-knit atmosphere must create a fantastic workplace environment, reflected in the extraordinary longevity of the staff, all of whom have been with the restaurant for between 10 and 20 years!

A royal reputation

Consistently ranking number one on TripAdvisor for Indian food in Ipswich, this gem of an eatery has found a dedicated customer base that adores what it does. Sumon estimates that 90% of its customers are regulars, with a whole host of repeated bookings from the wider community, including Rotary Club events and the Mayor's charity dinners.

The Maharani also has its own "special dish" called Handi Chicken. I'm told it's "similar to chicken bhuna, but more authentic, more flavourful." It's cooked in a small charcoal pot with a lid, with an aromatic and creamy tomato sauce.

History and heritage

A restaurant proud of its history, it was illuminating to discover that 'Maharani' means Queen or empress. The British government awarded Queen Victoria the title 'maharani' in 1876 as a way of asserting authority and cementing closer links between the two countries.

India was under British rule for nearly 200 years, and one of the lasting impacts of this was the embedding of royalist ideals across colonised countries.

The Maharani's commitment to quality food and excellent customer service is another 'nod' to their name. When asked about his plans for the future, Sumon simply stated, "more of the same." This restaurant has refined a winning recipe in both food and service over many years. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Sumon's only wish was to welcome more people through the doors so they could enjoy the food they were clearly very proud of.
