Ipswich guitarists invited to rock out at Norfolk and Norwich Festival opening event

Local guitar players of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the mass guitar performance at the free opening night of this year's festival on Friday, 9 May.

Why it matters: The "High Voltage" event offers amateur musicians, regardless of skill level, the opportunity to participate in a regional arts festival in what the organisers describe as "a heartfelt celebration of how music shapes the lives of the people who play it."

The mass guitar performance that will launch this year's Norfolk and Norwich Festival is open to "anyone and everyone," according to the organisers.

The details: High Voltage is created by acclaimed Australian artists Joseph O'Farrell (JOF) and Sam Halmarack, combining dance, music and performance to showcase local musical talent.

The performance will be part of the festival's opening day and will give "everyday guitarists the opportunity to play in the middle of the city."

How it works: Participants must register in advance and will receive a songbook with tabs and playing instructions after signing up.

  • Musicians are asked to arrive prepared with "a good idea of how to play the songs" included in the provided materials.

  • The event is free to participate in and open to all skill levels and ages.

  • Rehearsals will take place at St Stephen's Church in Ipswich from 21 April.

What they're saying: Organisers are encouraging potential participants to "dust off your guitars and get on board" for the community-focused event.

For context: The Norfolk and Norwich Festival is presented in partnership with Norfolk & Suffolk Music HUB and receives support from Arts Council England and Norfolk County Council.

The bottom line: Interested guitarists can sign up now via the festival website at https://nnfestival.org.uk/musician-callout-high-voltage/ or email highvoltage@nnfestival.org.uk with questions.
