Housing group to plant 12,000 flower bulbs across Suffolk and beyond

A large housing provider is set to plant thousands of flower bulbs across East Anglia, including several locations in Ipswich, as part of a new biodiversity initiative.

Why it matters: The project aims to increase biodiversity in urban areas while improving access to nature for local communities, with the bulbs expected to multiply and create larger displays in future years.

The big picture: Flagship Group, which manages more than 33,000 homes across the region, is distributing 500 bulbs to each of its 24 neighbourhood officers. The varieties include:

  • Wild daffodils

  • Bluebells

  • Grape hyacinth

  • Snake's head fritillary

  • Winter aconite

On the ground: Work has already begun in Ipswich, with neighbourhood officers Simon Ford and Jason Brett planting some of the first bulbs at a green space off Bloomfield Street.

What they're saying: "It's great to be part of something that brings a bit of life and colour to our communities while helping local wildlife," Brett said. "We hope the flowers they bring will brighten up people's days and bring a smile to their faces."

Behind the scenes: The planting is part of a broader six-year biodiversity plan launched by Flagship Group earlier this year. The housing provider owns approximately 1,200 green spaces across Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire.

Expert view: Daniel Salliss, Flagship Group's Biodiversity and Land Manager, said: "We want to increase biodiversity on our land and help improve access to nature in the communities we serve. The flowers will not only look good, they'll also become a source of nectar for insects. Bulbs naturally multiply, we should see more coming up each year."

Bottom line: The initiative represents a significant investment in local green spaces, with the potential for the displays to expand naturally over time while supporting local wildlife and community wellbeing.
