The big picture: The world premiere production tours to the New Wolsey Theatre on 16-17 September as part of a national tour that includes both traditional venues and actual prisons, including HMP Hollesley Bay and HMP Highpoint.
What to expect: Think Porridge meets Brassed Off. Described as "a laugh riot and a gut-punch in equal measure," the play follows prisoners at the fictional HMP Ditchfield who are challenged to write their own plays each week.
From boxing rings to the Brazilian rainforest, from painful pasts to wildly imaginative futures, these men discover that theatre becomes more than words on a page – it's a lifeline and a way to reclaim their voices.
But when creativity clashes with control, tensions rise, secrets unravel, and laughter gives way to rebellion.
The creative team: Award-winning playwright and director Danusia Iwaszko has drawn directly from her extensive experience working in prisons. She is an Artistic Associate at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds and has previously been an attached writer at the National Theatre.
Iwaszko also works extensively in communities, delivering writing and drama workshops with elderly people, young people, those experiencing homelessness, and women in refuges, giving voice to their stories through her theatrical work.
The cast: Penned Up stars Ntabiso Bhebhe, Chris Clarkson, Geir Madland, Heydn McCabe, Shelley McDonald, Ashton Owen, Rebecca Peyton and Liam Watson, with designer Madeleine Roberts and lighting designer Tim Westerman completing the creative team.
What's next: After Ipswich, the tour continues to venues across the country, including The Garage Norwich (18-19 September), before concluding with a five-night run at London's Arcola Theatre (7-11 October).
For context: The production is a collaboration between The Hal Company CIO and Suzanna Rosenthal Productions, with support from Arts Council England, Suffolk County Council, and several other funders including the Suffolk Community Foundation.
