E-bike charging among new Christmas fire risks, warns Suffolk Fire Service

As more households own e-bikes and e-scooters, fire officials are highlighting the specific risks of battery charging alongside traditional Christmas hazards.

Why it matters: With the rising popularity of electric vehicles in homes, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is adapting its seasonal safety advice to address new and traditional fire risks during the festive period.

The big picture: While Christmas trees, lights, and candles remain significant fire hazards, the increasing presence of rechargeable devices brings additional safety concerns.

Battery safety guidance includes:

  • Avoid charging e-bikes and e-scooters in bedrooms or escape routes

  • Never leave batteries charging while asleep or away from home

  • Keep chargers uncovered and away from direct sunlight

  • Charge removable batteries on hard, flat surfaces with good ventilation

Traditional safety measures still apply:

  • Water real Christmas trees daily to prevent them from drying out

  • Check Christmas lights for the British Standard mark or CE marking

  • Keep candles away from flammable decorations

  • Never leave cooking unattended

What they're saying: "We want everyone to enjoy themselves over the festive season," says Group Manager Lee Wilkins, SFRS head of Prevention, Community Engagement and Partnership Working. "By following these simple safety measures you can make sure that you and your loved ones will have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year."

The bottom line: As technology evolves, so do household fire risks. SFRS advises having smoke alarms on every level of your home and testing them regularly to protect against both modern and traditional fire hazards.
