Why it matters: The event gave charities direct access to businesses for skills, volunteer time and collaborative projects, creating potential for sustained partnerships beyond one-off festive donations.
The details: Charities including Brave Futures, Suffolk Mind and Hearing Dogs attended The Gift of Christmas event, where they networked with businesses and received pledges of time, skills and financial support.

What they're saying: Gemma Matten, business engagement manager at the University of Suffolk, said: "We wanted to create an event to kickstart Christmas, where we could partner up with Suffolk New College and give something back to the community. We know that bringing charities and businesses together to foster collaborative opportunities can bring many benefits to our region."

Wendy Sheppard, head of income generation for Suffolk Mind, said: "It was so good to see so many local charities in one place to celebrate the 'gift of giving' and to have the opportunity to talk to some new local business about what we do, as well as to catch up with others that regularly support us."

Sandra Lucas, corporate engagement officer for Brave Futures, said: "Local charities support local communities, and the event was a chance to get everyone in one room so that people can see the good that we all do."

Rachel Clarke, community fundraising manager for Hearing Dogs, said: "It was a great idea to bring all the charities together. It helped raise awareness of our charity and gave us the opportunity to meet representatives of other local organisations."

Mayor of Ipswich Cllr Stefan Long opened the event, saying: "Charities and businesses coming together to champion good causes across Ipswich is the perfect way to capture the importance of helping others during the festive season."
What's next: Matten said organisers plan to expand the event in 2026. "It's been amazing to see everyone together, and it's something we want to do every year and grow," she added.
The bottom line: Suffolk's educational institutions are stepping beyond their traditional role to build lasting infrastructure connecting charities with local business support, aiming to raise vital funds and forge long-term partnerships through an annual Christmas platform.
