Charity plant sale showcases how gardening brings Ipswich community together

ActivLives' autumn plant sale on Thursday, 25 September, is just one example of how the charity uses gardening to improve health and wellbeing while bringing people together across Ipswich and Suffolk.

Why it matters: The plant sale supports the charity's mission to help people of all ages and abilities learn skills, improve their wellbeing, and connect with their community through gardening and other activities.

The details: The end-of-season sale runs from 10:00 to 14:00 at the charity's plant nursery in the beautiful walled garden in Chantry Park, with dedicated volunteers on hand to help visitors choose perennials for their gardens or community green spaces.

Tea, coffee and cakes will be available at Nursery Cottage, giving visitors the chance to learn more about the charity's work while enjoying refreshments.

What they do: ActivLives delivers innovative health and wellbeing programmes across Suffolk, working with the NHS, Public Health Suffolk, local authorities and schools to address community needs.

The charity encourages everyone to lead an active, healthy lifestyle through projects including gardening, nature conservation, woodworking, flower arranging, health walks, adapted exercise and lunch clubs.

The bigger picture: The charity offers volunteering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, running courses to support positive wellbeing and build skills and confidence.

Every penny spent at the plant sale supports the charity's mission to reach out to people in Ipswich and Suffolk, helping them develop new skills while connecting with their community.

For the environment: ActivLives grows bee and butterfly-friendly plant varieties to attract pollinators, using environmentally friendly methods and peat-free compost. The charity encourages customers to return pots, trays and labels for reuse to cut down on plastic waste, but only accepts their own pots as other returns create a waste issue.

What's next: For those who cannot attend the sale, the nursery is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 14:00 throughout the year.

The bottom line: Pick up affordable plants, meet the team and support a local charity helping people build skills, friendships and better wellbeing through gardening.
