Town centre street market returns bigger this Sunday

The Walk's popular street market is back on Sunday, 28 June, and for the first time it will spread out of its alleys and into the high street, reaching through the Buttermarket and up to the Giles statue.

Why it matters: New businesses from across three counties are bringing their products to the Walk's street market, while organisers say the market is growing to help drive footfall and bring people back into the town centre.

The details: The market is run by organisers from Threads for all, Hanks Vegan and The Military Unit, with support from Ipswich Central. They have also gained the support and advice of Ipswich Borough Council's markets team to help the event spread into the high street.

As usual, the market will meander down The Walk amongst the independent shops and cafes, but it will now extend into the Buttermarket and through to the Giles statue.

What's new: A number of new businesses are joining the market, including many vintage fashion stalls.

  • Bulldog Vintage, which makes bespoke lamps, is setting up around the Giles statue alongside fashion and art stalls.
  • Pinkie & Quirky Vintage Frippery is setting up by the new planters on Princes Street.

What they're saying: "Following the success of past Markets, we've had an increased interest from stall holders," said Becky Eaks. "New businesses from Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex are booking pitches."

She added: "Now we have room for gazebos, we still have the smaller pitches down The Walk available, so we can offer opportunities to a wider range of stall holders so visitors can enjoy a wider variety of products."

What to look out for: To complement the independent businesses, there will be live music from local artists throughout the day within the market area, with buskers playing nearby.

The bottom line: As The Walk's street market continues to grow, this Sunday's expanded event offers shoppers a wider spread of independent and vintage traders to explore across the town centre.
