How we handle it

We treat every tip in confidence. We will never name you in a story without your say-so. Full stop.

Our process

First, we talk. Usually by phone or in person. We want to understand what you know and how you know it.

Then we look for proof. Documents, messages, contracts — anything that backs up what you're telling us. If there are other people who can corroborate your account, we'll ask to speak to them too. Please don't be offended, we're just doing our job.

Corroboration matters. One source is a lead. Multiple sources and documents make a story. We're careful, which sometimes means we're slow — but we'd rather be right than first.

Before we publish, we always contact whoever the story's about. Everyone gets the chance to respond. That's not optional, and we'll tell you when we're doing it.

We'll agree with you upfront what we can and can't use, and we'll check back in if anything changes. Nothing goes in without you knowing it's coming.

On the record or not?

Some stories land harder when a real name is attached. We may ask if you'd consider going on the record — it's always your choice, and we'll talk through what it means either way.

Staying safe

If you're worried about being traced:

  • Don't contact us from a work email, phone, or network.
  • Consider unfollowing us on social media for now.
