The 18-year-old turning community spirit into action
Five years after cycling from London to Brighton at 13 to raise money for a family friend's widow and four daughters, Logan Mashongamhende is at it again — this time organising his own charity football match for Inspire Suffolk.
Why it matters: Logan's event, taking place on Saturday, 29 August, at Inspire Suffolk on Lindbergh Road, Ipswich, will raise money for a local charity that helps young people across Suffolk build confidence, skills and brighter futures. Kick-off is at 14:30.
The details: The event is family-friendly and open to the whole community. Tickets must be booked in advance — you cannot simply turn up on the day.
- Under-18s: £5
- Adults: £10
- Family ticket (two adults and two children): £22
Booking fees apply. Local businesses are also invited to support the event through sponsorship of players' kits.
What they're saying: His mum, Clare Lucas, said: "As a parent, you spend years trying to teach your children confidence, initiative and resilience. Watching him turn an idea into reality has been incredibly special. I'm just helping him join the dots. He is the one making it happen.
"Looking back to that bike ride and seeing the young man he has become, I'm incredibly proud. His desire to help other people has never changed."
For context: Logan first made local headlines at 13 after completing a London to Brighton cycle ride in tribute to family friend Billy Hookway, who died from liver cancer at 36, leaving behind his wife and four young daughters. Due to a longstanding liver condition, Billy had been unable to obtain life insurance before his diagnosis. Logan took on the challenge alongside Billy's friends and family, and the fundraising effort ultimately helped raise £100,000 to support Billy's wife and children.
Now 18, Logan approached Inspire Suffolk himself and has taken ownership of organising the event from the ground up.
The bottom line: Tickets are on sale now at Inspire Suffolk's website. Whether you are coming to watch or just want to support a young man putting his community first, this is one afternoon well worth your time.
