Romanian butchers Magazin Romanesc Maestro to open on Carr Street
The new butchers opening in the former Samaritans unit on Carr Street has been confirmed as Magazin Romanesc Maestro, a Romanian meat and grocery outlet that will open its doors very soon.
The details: Magazin Romanesc Maestro will be a retail outlet for Terra Meats, a fresh and smoked meat producer based in Maldon, Essex. Store owner Doina told Ipswich.co.uk the shop's direct link to the factory would allow it to offer competitive prices and would open in the coming days or weeks.
The business will stock a wide range of products, she said, including fresh pork, chicken, beef and lamb, smoked meats, Eastern European groceries, fruit and vegetables, fresh bread, cakes and pastries. It will employ two staff from opening.
What they're saying: "We chose Ipswich because there are a lot of Romanian and Eastern European people in the area," Doina said.
Asked how he would respond to anyone reacting negatively to another Eastern European store opening on the high street, Doina said: "I understand not everyone will be interested, but our shop is here to add something new to the community and offer more choice for everyone. You're always welcome to stop by and see what we offer."
For context: The unit has stood empty since the Samaritans closed its doors there in November 2025, when a landlord break clause triggered the auction and subsequent sale of the property. As previously reported by Ipswich.co.uk, local property developer and investor Dr Sachin Karale purchased the premises and secured the tenants.
The Carr Street shop sits next door to the former Orwells Butchers unit, which closed in February 2020 after 34 years of trading on the street.
The bottom line: A Carr Street unit that has stood empty since November 2025 will return to use on Saturday, 25 April 2026, as Magazin Romanesc Maestro opens its doors with meat, groceries and bakery products from Essex-based Terra Meats.
