Why it matters: The works will affect four roads – Holywell's Road, Toller Road, Cliff Road and Ship Launch Road – with overnight closures running between Sunday, 21 June, and Monday, 21 September. A one-way system will also be in place on Toller Road and Cliff Road for the duration of the works.

The details: The improvements include pavement widening, new drainage, upgraded street lighting and resurfacing. Overnight closures (weeknights only, 20:00–06:00) are scheduled as follows:

  • Holywell's Road and Toller Road: 22–29 June and 1–5 September
  • Cliff Road and Ship Launch Road: 29 June – 4 July and 7–12 September

Temporary traffic lights and signed diversion routes will be introduced at different stages of the works. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever possible, though short delays may occur while work areas are made safe.

What they're saying: Councillor Christopher Hudson, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for transport and highways, said: "These improvements are an important part of getting Ipswich ready for the Prince Philip Lock Bridge, which will transform connections across the town.

"We do appreciate roadworks can be disruptive, but by carrying out much of this work overnight and carefully phasing closures, we are working to keep that disruption to a minimum.

"Once complete, these upgrades will deliver safer roads, better journeys, and support future growth for Ipswich."

The bottom line: The works form part of the wider Prince Philip Lock Bridge project, which will provide a new crossing over the River Orwell and strengthen links between the town centre and the waterfront.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, follow diversion signage and allow extra time for journeys. Further information is available at suffolk.gov.uk or via one.network.
