New illuminated sign going up at University of Suffolk

The University of Suffolk is installing a new illuminated sign on its Waterfront Building as part of a broader programme of campus improvements that also includes a new library, a student hub, and a pharmacy course launching in September.

Why it matters: The sign, which will increase the university's visibility on the waterfront and to people travelling in and out of town via Stoke Bridge, forms part of the institution's wider ambition to enhance its presence in Ipswich.

The details: Scaffolding and a cherry picker will be positioned outside The Mix café between Tuesday, 5 May, and Thursday, 28 May, to reach the external wall above the sixth floor of the Waterfront Building.

During the works, customers will be unable to enter The Mix from the water side doors and will instead need to access it via the University of Suffolk foyer. The café will remain open as usual for staff, students and members of the public.

What to look out for: A road closure will be in place from the corner of Coprolite Street up to the Salthouse Harbour Hotel for the duration of the works. Pedestrian access will also be restricted between the corner of Coprolite Street and the corner of the plaza and the Waterfront Building, with people directed around the front of the building via Coprolite Street and the plaza.

What they're saying: Nigel Lucker, chief estates officer at the University of Suffolk, said: "The installation of the new illuminated sign is part of our wider campus improvement plan, based on reimagining existing buildings to meet student and university needs, rather than new build.

"The sign expresses our pride in being the University of Suffolk, our connection to the town and forms part of our wider ambition to enhance our visibility locally. We apologise for any disruption caused while this work is underway."

The bottom line: The illuminated sign is a small but symbolic part of a bigger story: a university investing in its campus, its students and its place in the town, with a new library, student hub and pharmacy course.
