The details: The free event ran across the Otley campus, with activities including face painting, football, archery, equine displays and tree climbing.

Elsewhere on site, guests took in food demonstrations, an agricultural showcase, interactive construction games and tours of a newly revamped animal centre.

Hundreds of students also took part, supporting the public as they explored the campus, which was first established in 1970.

What they're saying: Charlotte Rossiter, events supervisor for Suffolk New College, said: "We had perfect weather – and it was a beautiful atmosphere filled with smiles and happiness. I'd say it was my favourite Big Day Out so far."

"A massive thanks to the community for coming along, our staff for supporting me and a big thanks also to all of the local businesses who took the opportunity to showcase what they do in front of thousands of people."

The visitor view: Hollie Sutherland, from Woodbridge, attended with her two daughters. She said: "It was brilliant – there was so much to do with the children. It's been awesome."

Fiona Garner, who came along with her family, said: "It's been well organised. It shows some of the older kids what careers are out there."

Her husband, Daniel Garner, added: "Every year I come here, and I walk away and think about another life in which I came to study here. It's inspirational family friendly fun."

The bigger picture: Numerous food and drink stallholders, local businesses and charities attended the event.

Tevin Clarke, owner of Stowmarket-based Savannah Smoke, said: "It brings out culture – it helps connect people in the area. I think the college is doing a very good job."

Sam Hodgkins, from beer company Jack Rabbit, which attended for the second year in a row, said: "It's a good classic country show."

Frances Fung, from Kokorozashi, said: "It's a great day for families."

Amy Holdstock, education co-ordinator for The Owl Sanctuary, said: "It [the Big Day Out] is so much more affordable than other local shows."

A student's perspective: Harriet Bloomfield, 18, from Darsham, is on a level three equine management course at Suffolk Rural. She said the experience had "given me new personal skills," adding: "It's been glorious and sunny."

The bottom line: Now in its 21st year, the Big Day Out continues to draw thousands to Suffolk Rural's Otley campus, showcasing the college's courses while bringing families, businesses and local charities together for a day in the countryside.
