Ipswich School enjoys best A Level results in two decades

Why it matters: The figure has only been bettered once at the school in the past two decades, with more than half of all A Levels awarded at the very top grades.

The details: Well over 40 boys and girls across the school's 120+ strong Year 13 cohort secured three A grades or higher, spanning both A Levels and the school's BTEC in Sport and Exercise Science.

What they're saying: Head of Ipswich School Nick Gregory said: "There is a huge amount in this set of results of which to be exceptionally proud, right across the 120+ pupils in our Year 13 cohort. Especially eye-catching and praiseworthy is that no fewer than 53% of A Levels (and their equivalents in BTEC) were secured at A* or A grade level."

He pointed to a recent ISI inspection, which found that Ipswich School "teachers know the pupils well and develop positive relationships with them", that they "develop pupils' curiosity and encourage critical thinking", and that the school provides "an ambitious education with pastoral care that nurtures pupils' physical and emotional well being".

"Moments like this make worthwhile for everyone here the day-in, day-out hard work, dedication and care that earned such comments in the first place," he added.

Ben Cliff, Head of Sixth Form, said: "What is so special today for those of us in the Sixth Form Team at Ipswich School is knowing the individual stories behind some of the less obvious outcomes, and also truly appreciating the breadth of talent on show in this group."

He added that students had also been excelling in "elite music, sport and on stage, at national and international level", and said "more leavers than ever before are heading off to degree apprenticeships" as they look towards their next steps.

The bigger picture: The school said this year's results continue a long record of strong academic performance, alongside a growing breadth of opportunities and pathways for pupils beyond the classroom. Ipswich School has been named Suffolk's top independent school in The Sunday Times Schools Guide for ten consecutive years.

The bottom line: For Ipswich School, results day has delivered one of its best performances in 20 years – with staff pointing to strength both in the exam hall and beyond it.
