Why it matters: Police say the tactic used against the seller could be targeting others advertising vehicles for sale, and want owners to be alert to similar attempts.

The details: Two males arrived to view a vehicle that had been advertised for sale between 12:30 and 13:15. One distracted the seller while the other put oil into the engine.

  • This caused the engine to smoke when the vehicle was taken for a test drive.
  • The suspects were persistent in their attempts to reduce the price of the vehicle.
  • No sale was made.

The bottom line: Police are asking car owners selling vehicles privately to remain vigilant, following the suspected scam attempt in Henley Road.
