Why it matters: Since starting as a handful of men repairing a rundown shed, ActivSheds has grown into a tight-knit community supporting men in Ipswich — including people living with dementia, young people with autism, and refugees and asylum seekers.

The details: Run by charity ActivLives, the group meets every Friday at the CRESS Pavilion. A core team of around eight members has built out a fully equipped workspace, complete with accessible workbenches for people with disabilities, shelving for project work, and rafters stocked with bird boxes and garden trugs.

The bigger picture: In response to growing demand, ActivSheds now runs a second session each week specifically for people who need extra support to build their skills and confidence.

What's next: The open day runs from 11:00 to 14:00 on Friday, 8 May, at the CRESS Pavilion, Halifax Road, IP2 8RE. Visitors are welcome to explore the ActivSheds facility, see the group's projects in action, and find out how to get involved.

The bottom line: Ten years on, ActivSheds is still doing what it set out to do by giving men in Ipswich somewhere to go, something to make, and people to lean on.
