Ipswich diagnostic centre lands £13m Government expansion

Ipswich's new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) is set to receive £13 million in additional Government funding, bringing the total investment in the Museum Street facility to around £25 million ahead of its planned opening in April 2027.

Why it matters: The extra funding will allow the centre to expand its services to include additional MRI and CT scanners, non-obstetric ultrasound (NOUS), echo, audiology and sleep studies — bringing a wider range of diagnostic tests closer to home for patients across East Suffolk and North Essex, but especially Ipswich.

The details: Planning permission for works at 12 Museum Street — including extensions, demolitions and alterations to make the building fit for purpose — was approved by Ipswich Borough Council in November, with construction ongoing. The centre is expected to open seven days a week, serve up to 250 patients per day and deliver as many as 90,000 scans each year.

The bigger picture: The investment forms part of a wider Government announcement of a £237 million package to open or improve Community Diagnostic Centres across the country. In total, four new facilities will open, 17 will be expanded, and 15 will receive enhancements to boost capacity.

What they're saying: Adrian Marr, interim chief executive at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT), said the new facility would give residents access to tests "in the right place, at the right time."

"We are delighted that our patients will benefit from this significant national investment," he said. "It will mean we can bring more vital diagnostic services closer to home for the communities we serve across East Suffolk and North Essex."

Health minister Karin Smyth said the investment was about "getting the NHS to work around the lives of patients" rather than expecting them to fit in with services.

"These sorts of provisions that are more convenient for patients, get that diagnosis and that reassurance for patients more quickly, are absolutely critical to that confidence in the public that we can turn around the NHS," she said.

Ipswich MP Jack Abbott called the £13 million investment "a massive boost for Ipswich, and a clear step forward in getting our NHS back on its feet."

“This centre will transform how people in our town access care, with more MRI, CT and ultrasound capacity, as well as vital services like audiology and sleep studies available right here in the community," he said.

“It means faster diagnoses, shorter waits, and less need to travel, making a real difference to patients across Ipswich. This is what Labour’s plan for the NHS is delivering: real investment, modern facilities, and an NHS that works around patients’ lives again.”

The bottom line: The £13 million boost significantly expands what Ipswich's new diagnostic centre will offer when it opens in 2027, with more scanners and a broader range of services set to reduce waiting times and ease pressure on existing NHS facilities in the region.
