Historic Ipswich building returns to its roots as a museum
The former Arlingtons building, that once housed Ipswich's original museum, has been brought back to life as MOTE – the Museum of the Environment.
Why it matters: The Museum Street building has come full circle, reverting to its founding purpose more than 140 years after the original Ipswich Museum relocated.
It will now be home to a new cultural venue focused on art, science and the environment.
The details: MOTE held its first exhibition opening on Friday, 7 August 2026 welcoming visitors to see artist Jane Stewart's exhibition, Re-Form, which runs until 18 September.
- Re-Form explores transformation, reuse and the relationship between people and the environment.
- The launch also marked the start of two further exhibitions running until 7 February 2027: Beneath the Surface by Zasmina Nedelcevova and MEAT by Sue Gascoyne.
- All three form part of MOTE's ongoing programme, The Shape of Change, curated by Alicia Doel.
What they're saying: Alicia Doel, curator and exhibitions officer at MOTE, said: "I was absolutely thrilled with how the evening went. Seeing people coming into the space, engaging with the work and having conversations was incredibly rewarding. It felt like the perfect first step for MOTE and for what we hope to build here."
One visitor said: "I didn't expect the displays to have such an impact on me, but it actually made me feel quite emotional."
The bigger picture: Built in 1847, the building originally opened as the first Ipswich Museum, becoming a centre for science, natural history and education. It hosted lectures by the Reverend John Stevens Henslow, a botanist and educator who mentored Charles Darwin.
The building later became the Arlingtons restaurant before reopening this year as MOTE.
The bottom line: Nearly two centuries after it first opened as a museum, the historic Museum Street building is once again a place for Ipswich residents to learn, explore and connect – this time with a focus on the environment.
MOTE is based at 13 Museum Street, Ipswich, IP1 1HE, and is open Wednesday to Saturday, 11:00-16:00, with free admission.
