Gym manager takes on 12 hour walk for Dunwich Heath
Asha Plavny-McKeon, a gym manager, says the damage to Dunwich Heath "really hit home" – this Thursday, 20 August, she will walk continuously on a treadmill for 12 hours, raising money to support Dunwich Heath's recovery.
Why it matters: The fundraiser will take place at Snap Fitness, Martlesham Heath, to raise money for Dunwich Heath following the recent wildfire at the Suffolk nature reserve.
The details: Asha encourages members and the wider community to get behind the fundraiser as she takes on the challenge, with all funds going towards supporting Dunwich Heath's recovery.
Member Sophie Bell will also lead a bake sale at the gym on the same day, with all proceeds going to the Dunwich Heath Fire Appeal.
What they're saying: "Dunwich Heath is such a special place and it's right on our doorstep, so seeing the impact of the wildfire really hit home for us," said Asha.
"We wanted to do something that could bring our members and the wider community together while raising money to support the recovery efforts. Walking for 12 hours is definitely going to be a challenge, but knowing what we're doing it for will keep me going.
"We'd love as many people as possible to support us, whether that's by donating, sharing the fundraiser or coming into the gym on the day to cheer me on."
For context: A wildfire broke out on 29 July 2026 and spread onto Dunwich Heath, devastating the landscape and its wildlife. The National Trust, which manages the site, says the fire has left large areas of the heath "unrecognisable" and important habitats and nesting sites have been lost.
The bigger picture: Asha's fundraiser has now raised over £500, from 31 supporters. The gym she manages has a track record of community fundraising. Last year, members donated more than 200 toys and books to Ipswich Hospital following an organised toy drive.

The bottom line: With the challenge taking place this Thursday, Snap Fitness Martlesham Heath is inviting the community to donate, share the fundraiser, or drop in to cheer Asha on.
