Free skate jam heads to Stowmarket this August

Why it matters: The jam is designed to give young people a free, positive activity during the summer holidays, using skateboarding, scootering and BMX to build confidence, encourage active lifestyles and bring the community together.

The details: The event runs from 12:00 to 16:00 at Stowmarket Skatepark, Finborough Road, Stowmarket, and is open to all abilities.

Competitions will be held across three age categories:

• Under 12s
• Under 16s
• 16 to 25 years

There will also be a best trick competition for each age category.

The bigger picture: The event will also raise awareness of Suffolk's Criminal Exploitation Hubs, which work with partners, voluntary groups, communities, children and families to help protect young people and communities from criminal exploitation.

The hubs build on the work of the Suffolk Against Gangs and Exploitation Team, focusing on supporting, disrupting, protecting and empowering communities in areas where young people may be at risk.

What they're saying: Sian Giles, criminal exploitation practitioner and event organiser, said: "This event is about giving young people the chance to come together, be active and show their skills in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

"Skateboarding, scootering and BMX are brilliant ways for young people to build confidence, make friends and feel part of their community. We want this to be a fun day, but also a chance to share important messages about support, safety and positive choices."

The bottom line: A day of free skating, scooting and BMX in Stowmarket will double as a platform to promote support and safety for young people across Suffolk.
