'Don't panic, but act promptly' – legal expert on Ross Coates closure
A senior solicitor at one of the town's largest law firms has spoken out about the unsettling impact on clients when a local solicitor's firm closes, following the Solicitors Regulation Authority's intervention at Ross Coates Solicitors on Tuesday.
Why it matters: The closure of Ross Coates Solicitors on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, has left clients with live legal matters – which could include transactions, court dates, probate matters and family issues – needing to find a new firm and recover their files.
What they're saying: Nicola Weldon, Partner and Head of Private Client at Ellisons, said the most important thing for affected clients was "not to panic, but to act promptly."
"When a local solicitor's firm closes, it can be incredibly unsettling for clients and their families, particularly where important documents are held by that firm, or a legal matter is still ongoing," she said.
"Clients should contact the appointed intervention agent about their file, papers or any money held by the firm, and gather any correspondence, reference numbers and key dates."
The details: Weldon advised that anyone with a live legal matter and an approaching deadline should seek advice as soon as possible.
"If there is a live transaction, court date, probate matter, family issue or other deadline, they should seek advice as soon as possible, so the next steps are clear," she said.

The bigger picture: Weldon framed the Ross Coates closure as part of a wider shift in the local legal sector.
"This also comes at a time of continued change in the local legal market," she said. "Clients are understandably looking for reassurance, continuity and stability from their professional advisers. Our priority is to help people understand their options calmly and sensitively, so they can take the right next step."
For context: The SRA closed Ross Coates Solicitors on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, following a string of regulatory sanctions stretching back to 2023, including a £13,690 fine last year for anti-money laundering failings and a written rebuke for accounts breaches.
Intervention is the most serious regulatory action the SRA can take against a law firm. The regulator has seized all monies held by the firm, including clients' money, alongside documents.
The bottom line: Former clients of Ross Coates Solicitors who need access to their files or money should contact Chris Evans of Lester Aldridge LLP, the intervening agents appointed by the SRA, on 01202 786 341 or by emailing interventions@la-law.com.
