Discount retailer and supermarket to fill Carr Street shops
Two Carr Street shops have been let to new tenants, with national discount retailer Bargain World opening its first Suffolk store and an "independent supermarket" taking over the former Betfred unit.
Why it matters: The lettings bring two new businesses to one of Ipswich's main shopping streets, adding another discount store and an "independent supermarket" to the town centre.
The details: Bargain World has signed a 15-year lease on 29-31 Carr Street. The unit covers around 4,826 sq ft (448.4 sq m), with a ground-floor sales area, an extensive basement and rear access for loading.
Independent supermarket operator SN Supermart Ltd has taken the former Betfred unit at 34 Carr Street on a five-year lease. The 1,953 sq ft (181.43 sq m) shop has a ground-floor retail area and an ancillary first floor.
Who is Bargain World: Established in 1994, Bargain World is an independent, family-owned discount retailer that began life as market traders. It opened its first store on High Street North in East Ham, London. The Carr Street shop will be its first in Suffolk.
What they're saying: Rachael Jackson, a spokesperson for Penn Commercial the letting agents, said: "We are experiencing a resurgence in enquiries for what have previously been considered as more 'secondary' streets in Ipswich town centre, with tenants seeking opportunities to take retail space in areas that they were unable to consider before.
"We wish Bargain World and SN Supermart Ltd all the very best of success in their new retail premises in popular Carr Street, which offer excellent footfall and convenient car parking, right in the heart of Ipswich town centre.”
The bigger picture: Four more units on Carr Street are still available to let for retail use - numbers 27, 35, 41 and 43 - ranging from 547 sq ft (50.8 sq m) to 16,609 sq ft (1,543 sq m).
The bottom line: Two Carr Street shops are set to welcome new businesses, with Bargain World making its Suffolk debut and a food store moving into the former Betfred unit.
