Buttermarket shut again after 'glass panel failure'
The Buttermarket has temporarily closed after a tempered glass panel failed in the north mall, less than three weeks after reopening from a burst water main.
Why it matters: The shopping, dining and leisure centre on St Stephens Lane is shut to the public, disrupting shoppers, tenants and staff for the second time in less than a month.
The details: Centre bosses said the Buttermarket is "temporarily closed" following the failure of a tempered glass panel in the north mall. In a statement, the centre said:
"We apologise for the inconvenience – the safety of our visitors, tenants, and staff remains our top priority."
The centre said it will reopen once safety measures are in place.
Not all of the centre is affected. Wagamama, Watts Cafe, Twist 'n' Shout, and TKMaxx (via its Queen Street entrance only) remain open.
For context: This is the second closure at the Buttermarket in under a month. The centre shut on Friday, 28 August, after a burst water main, with parts of the electrical system switched off while contractors carried out safety checks. It reopened on Thursday, 3 September, once those checks were complete.
The bottom line: With no timeframe yet given for reopening, shoppers heading to the Buttermarket should check ahead, though several shops and restaurants at the centre remain open as usual.
