Bug hunts and bee visits on offer at Ipswich nature day
With the school summer holidays in full swing, ActivLives is inviting Ipswich families to a free nature day featuring bug hunts, butterfly counts and a chance to meet the bees at Maidenhall Allotments.
Why it matters: The Family Nature Day gives local families a free, hands-on way to get outdoors and explore wildlife during the holidays, at a community garden built specifically for that purpose.
The details: The event runs from 11:00 to 14:00 on Monday, 10 August, at the People's Community Garden, Maidenhall Allotments, Halifax Road, Ipswich IP2 8RE. Activities include:
- Exploring the community garden
- A bug hunt and butterfly count
- Nature crafts
- A bee experience, with visits to the hives
- Meeting other local families
Refreshments will be available, and families are invited to bring and share their own picnic lunch.
Who can join: The event is aimed at families with young children up to the age of 11, and all children must be supervised by an adult.
For context: The day forms part of ActivLives' ActivGardens Wild About Nature project, which brings the community together to grow and garden sustainably, maintain wildlife areas and learn about beekeeping at the urban allotment site. Funded for two years by the National Lottery Community Fund, the project also runs weekly volunteering and beekeeping sessions alongside other nature-based activities in the garden and out in the community.
What's next: The event is free, but families are asked to book a place in advance. To register, contact project officer Phoebe Hyett at phoebe@activlives.org.uk or on 07756 533424, or call ActivLives on 01473 345350. More details on the wider project are available on the ActivLives website.
The bottom line: A free day of bug hunts, bee visits and nature crafts awaits Ipswich families at Maidenhall Allotments on 10 August, part of a wider push to get the community growing, gardening and caring for local wildlife together.
