Suffolk radar commemoration event at BT Adastral Park just four weeks away

Tickets are still available for a special event marking the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII and celebrating Suffolk's pioneering role in radar development, taking place on 15 August.

Why it matters: The commemorative event will highlight how radar technology developed in Suffolk proved decisive in winning the Second World War, with presentations suitable for both the general public and technical audiences.

The event, organised by Bawdsey Radar Trust in partnership with The Communications and Electronics Museum Trust and the Defence Electronics History Society, will be held at BT Adastral Park in Martlesham Heath – the site of the world's first airborne radar experiments.

The details: Visitors can choose between two separate sessions:

  • Morning session (10:00-12:00): Designed for non-technical audiences, featuring five accessible 10-minute presentations on radar pioneers and historical significance

  • Afternoon session (14:00-16:30): Offers four more technical 20-minute presentations on radar's crucial role in the Battle of Britain and the Battle of the Atlantic

For context: Bawdsey was home to the world's first operational radar station, while the General Post Office (now BT) provided essential support for radar development during the war years, making BT Adastral Park a fitting venue for the commemoration.

What they're saying: Peter Wain, Co-Chair of Bawdsey Radar Trust, said, "In this 80th anniversary year of the end of the Second World War, we wanted to celebrate the enormous achievements made in Suffolk in developing radar and airborne radar. There is no doubt that we would not have won the war without the work of many brave men and women at Bawdsey and the involvement of the General Post Office at the time."

Don't miss: The event will feature unique replicas of original airborne radar equipment, offering visitors a rare glimpse of the technology that helped turn the tide of the war.

The bottom line: Tickets cost £12.50 per session, with coffee and biscuits included. Pre-booking is essential, with full names required at least two weeks in advance for security clearance. Attendees must be at least 16 years old and show photographic ID on arrival. For more information and to book tickets, visit bawdseyradar.org.uk.
