Regent's Cinderella breaks box office record after reopening

The Ipswich Regent Theatre's festive pantomime has broken box office records following the venue's £3.45 million refurbishment, the council has announced.

Why it matters: The record-breaking sales show audiences have packed the theatre since it reopened earlier this month after a seven-month closure to modernise facilities and restore its Art Deco heritage.

What they're saying: Councillor Jane Riley, portfolio holder for culture and customers, said the pantomime had broken box office records for the venue: "The 2025 festive panto Cinderella has been the perfect production for celebrating the curtains coming up once again at the Ipswich Regent Theatre, and we've already broken the box office record. At each performance from Opening Night onwards, it's been incredible to see everyone enjoy the new front-of-house facilities and then be enthralled and entertained by the talented cast on stage."

The details: The £3.45 million refurbishment, funded through a Restoration Levy, refurbished three bars, redeveloped the Circle Lounge, installed a new lift, upgraded the toilets, and restored the Art Deco frontage and foyer. The theatre closed in May 2025, with work completed by mid-November.

For context: KLH Architects designed the restoration, and Mixbrow Construction managed the project, with the vast majority of works carried out by local contractors. The theatre's bars feature a partnership with Adnams, which installed what the company describes as the longest bar it has ever created.

The bottom line: Record ticket sales for Cinderella suggest audiences are embracing the transformed venue, validating the council's investment in modernising the historic theatre.
