Touch it, play it, hear it: Interactive flower sculpture set to land on the Cornhill

An immersive light and sound sculpture that lets visitors create music by touch is coming to Ipswich's Cornhill next week – and it will be free for everyone to enjoy.

Why it matters: The In Bloom installation, brought to Ipswich by the town centre's business improvement district Ipswich Central, offers a free, hands-on creative experience for children and adults alike in the heart of the town centre.

The details: Designed and created by Kumquat Lab in Edinburgh with Creative Scotland, In Bloom is a large plant-shaped sculpture inspired by the process of flower pollination. Colourful glowing spheres represent the plant's flowers, and touching them produces musical notes – an interaction inspired by the flight of pollinators as they move from flower to flower.

The sculpture will be on the Cornhill from Monday, 2 March until Sunday, 16 March 2026.

The big picture: In Bloom was established in 2024 and has previously appeared at Battersea Power Station in London in early 2025, Canary Wharf in January 2026, and Cambridge in February 2026, before making its way to Ipswich.

What they're saying: Lee Walker, chief executive of Ipswich Central, said: "As we enter spring and flowers start to appear, having the In Bloom installation in Ipswich town centre is the perfect reminder of colour and life, sound and music lifting the community.

"Having visited the art installation in London, it's amazing that we could bring it to Ipswich for all to enjoy. Thank you, Kumquat Lab, for not only creating this amazing piece but also for sharing it with the town and to Ipswich Borough Council for all the help in making this possible."

Sebastien Guillen, who co-founded Kumquat Lab in 2021, said: "We're delighted to bring In Bloom to Ipswich Cornhill. What people often respond to most is its immediacy: the simple joy of creating something together, regardless of age or background. Through play, we hope the work sparks moments of connection while highlighting the importance of nurturing our environment."

The bottom line: Free, fun and fleeting – In Bloom will only be on the Cornhill for two weeks, so it is well worth a visit before it moves on.
