Police hunt suspect after elderly woman loses £600 in Ipswich distraction burglary

An elderly woman lost hundreds of pounds after a man posing as a tradesman entered her Kelly Road home on Tuesday afternoon, in a distraction burglary that follows similar incidents across Suffolk.

Why it matters: The incident is part of a pattern of distraction burglaries targeting vulnerable residents across the county, with similar attempts reported in Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket in November.

The details: The burglary took place between 16:26 and 16:30 on Tuesday, 2 December.

  • A man claiming to be carrying out work at a neighbouring property approached the homeowner and asked her to run taps in her bathrooms and kitchen.

  • During this time, police believe the suspect stole £500-600 from the woman's purse whilst searching the property.

  • The suspect is described as a white man, aged around 40, with dark hair. He was less than 5ft 9ins tall and was wearing dark, work-style clothing.

For context: The recent incidents in Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket involved men claiming to be tradesmen who entered properties on the pretence of looking for leaks or having found one in the street.

What's next: Officers have been making numerous enquiries and have carried out door-to-door and CCTV checks in the area. Residents with cameras or dash-cameras who were driving in the area are asked to review any footage.

Neighbours, friends and family members are also asked to share this advice with elderly and vulnerable residents who may not see this appeal.

Crime prevention advice: Police are urging residents to be cautious and follow these key safety measures:

  • Use your door viewer to see who is there

  • If you open the door, put the chain on first

  • Always ask for identification and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home

  • Use the phone number advertised in the phone book or online, as the number on their identity card could be fake

  • If you feel at all unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there

  • For pre-planned appointments with utility companies, a password scheme can be set up

Residents are also being asked to report any similar incidents or suspicious activity to both police and Suffolk Trading Standards.

The bottom line: Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the man described or anything suspicious around the time of the burglary, as they work to prevent further incidents targeting vulnerable residents.

Any witnesses, or anyone with any information, are asked to contact South CID quoting crime reference 37/68241/25, via:
