Nine days left to apply for primary school places in Suffolk

Parents and carers in Ipswich and across Suffolk have nine days left to apply for primary school places for September 2026, with demand remaining high across the county ahead of the Thursday, 15 January, deadline.

Why it matters: Applying on time means families are considered alongside all other applicants, giving the strongest chance of securing a preferred school. Late submissions are processed only after all on-time places have been allocated, and last year, 96.3% of on-time applicants received their first-choice school.

The details: Children born between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022 who are due to start primary, infant or junior school in September 2026 must apply. An application is required even if a child already attends a school-run nursery, pre-school or family hub.

Families can list up to three schools in order of preference and should think carefully about travel arrangements. Eligibility for funded school transport is based on attending the nearest suitable school with a place available, which may not be the catchment school.

What they're saying: Councillor Andrew Reid, cabinet member for education and SEND at Suffolk County Council, said: "Parents and carers need to apply for a school place by the closing date of 15 January 2026 to make sure they have the best chance of securing a place at their preferred school."

For context: Families planning to move house or expecting changes before September should still apply using their current address.

What's next: Apply online at www.suffolk.gov.uk/admissions, where you'll receive confirmation and can view your offer on National Offer Day (Thursday 16 April 2026). Paper forms (CAF1) are available by calling 0345 600 0981, though proof of postage is advised as acknowledgement is not provided.

The bottom line: Apply before Thursday, 15 January, to give your child the best chance of getting your first-choice primary school for September 2026.
