Ipswich Waterfront gets £129,000 lighting upgrade

New energy-efficient LED streetlights have been installed along Albion Wharf, funded by Suffolk County Council's £2 million Ipswich Investment Fund.

Why it matters: The upgrade improves safety along a popular route used by many residents and visitors while incorporating energy-saving technology and sustainable features.

The details: Twenty-five new low energy LED lanterns have been installed between Neptune Marina apartments and Anchor Street apartments, creating continuous lighting coverage from Dance East to Patteson Road—a distance of 0.7 miles.

The new lighting can be remotely monitored and controlled through Suffolk County Council's central management system, allowing for dimming at pre-determined times to maximise energy savings.

By the numbers:

  • £129,000 – cost of the lighting upgrade

  • £2 million – total size of the Ipswich Investment Fund

  • 25 – number of new LED lanterns installed

  • 25 years – design life of the new columns

  • 0.7 miles – length of continuously lit waterfront route

What they're saying: "I am very pleased that we have completed the first project to benefit through our Ipswich Investment Fund," said Councillor Paul West, Suffolk County Council Cabinet member for Ipswich, Operational Highways and Flooding.

"This is an area of town used by many residents and visitors, so it was important that a high standard of streetlighting was installed."

Behind the scenes: The installation required collaboration between multiple organisations including Suffolk County Council, Ipswich Borough Council, the University of Suffolk, and Associated British Ports—all of whom have ownership stakes in the area.

The work involved approximately 500m of trenching, often through concrete, and associated underground cabling.

The big picture: The Ipswich Investment Fund was established following recommendations from the Ipswich Policy Development Panel to improve neighbourhoods and the town centre. It focuses on boosting employment, arts/culture, and sustainable travel.

The bottom line: The black-finished columns match those in the town centre and feature practical design elements including hinges for easier maintenance and retention sockets for quick removal and installation, ensuring both aesthetic consistency and practical functionality.
