Why it matters: Caroline Dow, a Butterfly Volunteer at Ipswich Hospital, was among around 100 participants who braved blustery winds and rain on Saturday to complete the Hospital Hero Hike from Colchester Hospital to Ipswich Hospital, collectively raising £20,000 for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
The details: The Butterfly Service provides comfort, company and compassion to families and patients receiving end-of-life care. Dow's fundraising will help support this vital service alongside other appeals close to participants' hearts.
The event, organised by Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, saw walkers trek through the East Anglian countryside despite challenging weather conditions.
The funds raised will support vital services across the trust and help provide extras that go beyond what the NHS can provide, including life-saving equipment, cutting-edge technology, and small comforts such as tea and coffee in waiting rooms.

What they're saying: "After months of training, I was thrilled to complete the hike alongside my good friend Mary. It was very challenging but very enjoyable and the support along the way meant a great deal to us," said Dow.
"I don't like to think of anyone being on their own at the end of their lives and I also know how hard it can be for a patient's family or loved ones. I am so thankful to my friends and family for their support and helping me to raise so far over £1,600."
Gavin Lamb, corporate and trusts fundraising manager for the charity, said: "We are so proud of everyone who braved the weather and completed this year's Hospital Hero Hike. Their determination and generosity will have a lasting impact on our hospitals, staff and patients."
The bottom line: Through determination and community spirit, volunteers like Caroline are ensuring patients across the region receive not just medical care, but compassion and companionship when they need it most.
