Why it matters: The event marks the official start of the festive season in Ipswich, bringing the community together for a free family celebration in the town centre.

The details: The celebration will run from 16:00 to 19:30 on the Cornhill, with Gen X Radio leading the festivities as official media partners. The Mayor of Ipswich, Cllr Stefan Long , will switch on the lights at 18:45.

Entertainment includes a special performance from the cast of Ipswich Regent Theatre's 2025 pantomime Cinderella, alongside live musical performances.

What they're saying: Cllr Jane Riley, portfolio holder for culture and customers at Ipswich Borough Council, said: "The Christmas Lights switch-on is always a magical time for Ipswich, and we're thrilled to welcome the community back for this year's celebration. It's a wonderful opportunity to come together, celebrate our town, and light up the start of the festive season with joy and excitement for all ages."

For visitors: Free parking will be available at Crown Car Park on Sunday, 16 November, and on the following five Sundays leading up to Christmas. The offer runs from 10:00 on each Sunday until 08:00 the following Monday morning. Customers should take a ticket on entry and use it on exit.

What's next: A Blue Badge drive-through event will take place on Sunday, 30 November, from 18:00 to 21:00, giving those with mobility needs the chance to enjoy the Christmas lights. Further details about the ticketed event will be released soon.
