Buttermarket unveils 'Chatty Bench' to tackle loneliness

The Buttermarket has installed the "Chatty Bench" after security staff noticed people sitting alone for hours and began offering friendly conversations to combat loneliness.

Why it matters: In an age where loneliness and social isolation are increasingly common, the initiative promotes mental wellbeing, encourages inclusivity, and helps foster stronger community ties.

The big picture: The Chatty Bench project emerged from security staff's observations of people sitting alone for extended periods. Security Manager Tyrone Candee explains: "Every day we see people sitting alone on the bench, sometimes for several hours. The team and I will often have a little chat with them, making sure they're okay or seeing if they'd like some company."

The details: The specially designated seat provides a space where people can pause and enjoy conversation, whether with friends, strangers, or team members from Buttermarket. The security team noticed individuals sitting alone for long periods and began striking up conversations to check in, offer a friendly ear, or simply share a moment of kindness.

What they're saying: "Sometimes a small chat can make a big difference," said Candee, who believes the bench will offer both visitors and locals a chance to connect, share stories, or simply brighten someone's day.

The bottom line: The Chatty Bench represents a simple but powerful community initiative that transforms everyday security observations into meaningful action against social isolation.
