Ipswich man ordered to repay £18,767 in fraud case
An Ipswich man who defrauded the social housing system has been ordered to repay £18,767.82, following a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing at Ipswich Crown Court.
Why it matters: Mahmut Dagdelen, of Braziers Wood Road, Ipswich, was convicted of five fraud offences last year relating to false applications for social housing and the Right to Buy scheme, offences that took place over more than six years.
The details: Dagdelen was sentenced in July 2025 under the Fraud Act 2006. At a Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 hearing on 25 June 2026, the court made a confiscation order against him of £18,767.82, having determined he had benefited from his criminal conduct by that amount. He has three months to pay.
The court also ordered Dagdelen to pay £8,955.50 in costs to Ipswich Borough Council within six months, along with a £140 victim surcharge.
He has already repaid £139,332.18 in compensation to the council for losses arising from his offending.
For context: The confiscation proceedings follow a lengthy investigation by Ipswich Borough Council's Corporate Fraud Team.
What they're saying: Councillor Martin Cook, portfolio holder for resources, said: "This outcome demonstrates our commitment to pursuing those who seek to abuse the social housing system and ensuring that public money is protected.
"Social housing is a valuable resource that must be available to those who genuinely need it. Fraud of this nature undermines fairness and can deny housing opportunities to residents and families who are entitled to support."
He added: "I would like to thank our Corporate Fraud Team for their persistence and professionalism throughout this complex investigation and the subsequent court proceedings. We will continue to investigate allegations of housing fraud and take appropriate action wherever wrongdoing is identified."
The bottom line: Dagdelen must now repay a further £18,767.82 on top of the £139,332.18 already returned to the council, closing out a six-year fraud case that has cost the public purse dearly.
