Free Ipswich Windrush festival reveals June line-up
The Ipswich Windrush Society has unveiled the full entertainment line-up for this year's Heritage & Legacy Music Festival, a free event taking place on Saturday, 20 June, at Landseer Park, with a street parade, live music and Caribbean food stalls.
Why it matters: Caribbean people have been part of Ipswich's story since the Windrush era in 1948, and the annual festival — now in its fourth year — celebrates that heritage through music, food and community.
The details: The day begins at 11:00 with a parade from the Clapgate Lane entrance, travelling via Landseer Road, Rands Way, Queens Way and Nacton Road, featuring steel drums and performances from local dance group MRD Dance.
A full programme of live entertainment runs from 12:00 to 17:00, with an after party at The Golden Hind from 17:30.
The line-up: This year's programme includes community gospel group IPCity Choir and reggae and soul vocalist Claire Angel, alongside DJs Immortal and Gemini Don and vocalists Olu and Carole Yvonne.
What they're saying: Max Thomas, founder of the Ipswich Windrush Society, said: "This event is about celebration, heritage, community and togetherness. Every year we see people from all backgrounds coming together through music, food and culture, and this year's line-up really reflects that energy. We want as many people as possible to come down, support the event and be part of something really special for Ipswich."
The bigger picture: Organisers have expressed frustration after promotional banners placed around the town by volunteers were removed ahead of the event — the second year in a row this has happened.
Thomas said: "It's incredibly frustrating for our volunteers, who give up their own time to help promote the festival and make it a success. Although we're trying to see the funny side and say they've become collectors' items, every missing banner impacts our ability to spread the word about this free community event."
For context: Two days after the Landseer Park event, a further free celebration takes place on the Cornhill on Monday, 22 June from 12:00 to 16:30, delivered in partnership with the Suffolk Windrush Select Committee, featuring a live steel band, DJ sets and a marketplace of Caribbean food and local stallholders.
The bottom line: Free to attend and open to all, Ipswich's Windrush 78 celebrations are taking place on Saturday, 20 June and Monday, 22 June, and promise good music, food and community spirit.
