Why it matters: Families using a free breakfast club every school day can save up to £450 a year and around 95 hours of childcare.

The details: The following schools in Ipswich will join the programme from September:

  • Springfield Junior School
  • Hillside Primary School
  • Ranelagh Primary School
  • St Margaret's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School
  • St Helen's Primary School
  • St Pancras Catholic Primary School
  • Castle Hill Infant School
  • Castle Hill Junior School

They join Stone Lodge Academy and The Beeches Community Primary School, which were among the first schools nationally to offer the scheme when it launched last year.

From September, schools must also stick to new legal limits on the number of branded uniform items they can require, meaning parents can buy more everyday items such as trousers and shirts from supermarkets and high street shops rather than specialist suppliers.

By the numbers: Nationwide, 1,400 more schools will join the scheme from September, taking the total to more than 2,700.

More than 680,000 children are expected to attend a free breakfast club after the summer. The government says the scheme has already delivered almost £25m in cumulative savings to families, serving more than 10 million free breakfasts.

What they're saying: Jack Abbott, MP for Ipswich, said: "I'm delighted that eight more Ipswich schools will be joining Labour's free breakfast club programme this September, building on the success already delivered at Stone Lodge Academy and The Beeches Community Primary School.

"This is fantastic news for children and families across our town. Free breakfast clubs mean more children can start the school day with a nutritious meal, feeling settled and ready to learn, while helping parents with the pressures of the morning routine and the cost of living."

The bottom line: Ipswich now has ten schools which will offer free breakfast clubs from September, part of a nationwide scheme that aims to bring savings to families across the country.
