Fans flock to Ipswich's Waterfront for Ed Sheeran performance
Ed Sheeran brought his music back to the streets of Ipswich today, performing a free set on Ipswich's Waterfront. Fans describing it as "spectacular" got a chance to see one of the world's biggest artists up close – for free.
Why it matters: Sheeran announced the appearance on his Instagram story the day prior, and drew crowds to the area outside of the University of Suffolk and The Mix Cafe.
The details: Fans packed the Waterfront, some arriving as early as 07:00, to watch Sheeran perform his biggest hits, with crowds pressing against barriers as police escorts and security kept order. Residents looked on from their balconies, and university students hung out of windows to catch a glimpse of the performance.

The big picture: Some fans had travelled significant distances to be there. "I woke up at literally 4am coming from west London, took the train, went to Liverpool Street just to be here," said one fan.
What they're saying: The reaction from those who attended was overwhelmingly positive. "Seeing him give back to the community, in a way which is completely free, for everyone to see, is really spectacular," said one attendee. Another simply described the experience as "thrilling".
For context: The performance was linked to Orange Amps as part of their "Play It Home" campaign.
The bottom line: For one day, one of the world's most famous musicians came home — and Ipswich turned out in force to welcome him back.
