Why it matters: Driving while disqualified and without insurance remains a persistent problem on Suffolk's roads, and police say custodial sentences reflect the seriousness of these offences.

The details: Thomas Gillingham, 21, appeared before Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 20 May, where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months' imprisonment for driving while disqualified and driving without motor insurance.

  • Roads policing officers spotted Gillingham driving a Ford Ranger at The Beeches, Little Blakenham, at approximately 18:15 on Tuesday, 19 May.
  • He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while disqualified.
  • He was taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning before being charged with both offences.

What they're saying: PC Alexander Fletcher from the Roads Armed Policing Team said: "Gillingham's continued disregard for road traffic law has resulted in a custodial sentence, reflecting the seriousness of these offences.

"Driving whilst disqualified and without insurance puts other road users at risk. We will continue to work to keep our roads safe and take action against those who choose to ignore the law."

The bottom line: Suffolk Police say the sentence sends a clear message that those who repeatedly ignore road traffic laws can expect to face the full consequences in court.
