What is a Provost? A Provost typically serves as the senior academic administrator in universities, overseeing faculty and curriculum matters. The role involves responsibility for educational programs and academic priorities across the institution.

Background: Professor Allen joins from City St George's, University of London, where she held several leadership positions including Interim Executive Dean and Director of the Institute of Medical, Biomedical and Allied Health Education.

What they're saying: "I am thrilled to join the University of Suffolk at such a dynamic time in its growth and evolution," Professor Allen said. "As a young and agile institution, it offers exciting opportunities to implement innovative approaches to learning and teaching, attracting students from across the UK and around the world while continuing to deliver exceptional student experiences."

By the numbers:

  • The University of Suffolk has climbed 68 places in the Complete University Guide rankings in the last three years

  • It now ranks in the top 60 universities in the UK according to the 2025 Guide

  • The university scored above the England average in all nine assessment areas in the 2024 National Student Survey

For context: Professor Allen also serves as a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society Research Strategy Committee and as an Associate Director for the National Institute for Health and Care Research South London Applied Research Collaboration.

The bigger picture: The appointment comes as the university introduces new courses such as Dental Hygiene and Therapy and Esports, and after recent successes including ranking first in the East of England for facilities at the 2024 WhatUni Student Choice Awards.

The bottom line: University Vice-Chancellor Professor Jenny Higham said Allen's "excellent academic background and senior managerial experience are the perfect fit for our new Provost role" as she joins the team to "collaboratively drive the next phase of university development."
