Two people arrested on Wednesday in connection with a serious sexual assault in Stowmarket last month have been bailed, as detectives continue to appeal for information about the attack on a female runner.

Why it matters: The investigation into the broad daylight assault on a public path in Stowmarket continues, with police still seeking information from the public.

The details: The assault took place between 05:45 and 06:00 on Wednesday, 19 November. A woman aged in her 30s was out running along a pathway off Iliffe Way when she was approached by an unknown man, who pulled her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

On Wednesday, 3 December, detectives arrested two people as part of the investigation:

  • A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and attempted rape

  • A 49-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender

The pair were taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and have subsequently been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The investigation: The survivor continues to be supported by specialist trained officers and has been assisting detectives with their enquiries. This includes helping to produce an EvoFIT likeness of the suspect, which was released to the public on 26 November.

The suspect is described as white, approximately 5ft 10ins in height, of medium build and was wearing a dark woolly beanie hat. He also wore a thick, dark rain jacket and dark trousers, and is reported to have smelled strongly of cigarettes and cannabis.

What they're saying: Detectives would like to thank members of the public for their assistance in this investigation to date, and continue to appeal for information about the incident.

What's next: Anyone with information should contact West CID at Bury St Edmunds Police Station, quoting reference 37/65640/25, via the Suffolk Police website at www.suffolk.police.uk/tell-us or by calling 101.

Support available: If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual assault or rape, Suffolk Police encourages you not to suffer in silence and to report it. For more information and to find support services available, visit www.suffolk.police.uk/support. In an emergency, call 999.

The bottom line: As the investigation continues into last month's attack on a Stowmarket runner, two people arrested on Wednesday remain on bail while police appeal for further information from the public.
